Scarifying (Dethatching)

Scarifying, also known as dethatching, is the mechanical removal of thatch—a dense layer of dead and living organic material, including roots, stems, and shoots—that accumulates between the soil surface and the grass blades. Excessive thatch impedes air, water, and nutrient penetration to the root zone, leading to poor turf health. The process involves using specialised equipment with vertical blades or tines to cut through and lift this layer, improving soil aeration and promoting decomposition by soil microorganisms. Regular scarifying helps restore soil permeability, enhances root development, and reduces the risk of disease and pest infestations, ultimately supporting a more resilient and vigorous lawn.
